Chapter 13
On the way back from the hospital we stopped by the inn and picked up our luggage and officially checked out. Thankfully, we didnât run into Dax. That was a conversation I really didnât need to have now.
âAre you sure about this?â Lily asked me as we waited for the inn owner to confirm our decision.
âYeah, Iâm sure. I have to get to the bottom of this. If the FBI doesnât want my help, Iâll go to people who do.â
âWhat about that guy with the tattoo? Isnât that something authorities should be aware of?â
âI hate it when you make sense,â I said. âIâll text Dax on our way back to the estate.â
Kimberly and Timothy waited for us in the car, and once our luggage was in the trunk, we were on our way to the estate. I held off on texting Dax right then and there because I didnât want Kimberly and Timothy to ask me any questions.
When we arrived, this time the driver parked right in front of the main house. The cleaners had apparently done their job and now Kimberly felt more comfortable staying there.
Lily, on the other hand, wasnât a fan.
âItâs safer in the main house,â Kimberly said when Lily brought up the idea of us staying in the guest house. âI donât want to spread the guards thin.â
And that was that.
To my surprise, Mrs. Worth was there, greeting us at the door. She informed Kimberly and Timothy that the lawyer had called them and that funeral arrangements needed to be made soon for their father.
âI thought Uncle Gerald was in charge of that?â Timothy said.
âThey just want to make sure you agree with all the decisions, thatâs all,â Mrs. Worth said.
While Timothy dealt with that, Kimberly led us upstairs to show us our rooms.
They were both at the end of the hall.
I looked around nervously.
âDonât worry, Callie,â Kimberly said. âMy parentsâ room is at the other end of the house.â
âThatâs a relief,â Lily said.
âI know how you feel,â Kimberly admitted. âI donât think Iâll be able to go to dadâs office anytime soon, no matter how good a job the cleaners did.â
Kimberly left us to our own devices. Lily took the farthest room, while I took the one right next to hers.
âIf we get murdered in the night, Iâll haunt you for the rest of your afterlife,â she said.
âYou canât haunt a ghost, Lily. Thatâs just silly,â I said.
âDonât worry, Iâll find a way,â she said and closed the door in my face. Then I heard her turn the lock.
I shrugged and went to my own room. And then, just in case, I locked mine as well. Hey, better safe than sorry, though I was pretty sure the Eastman kids had keys to every door. But at least Iâd hear them coming if they tried anything.
I took my phone out to text Dax, but as soon as I had it in my hand, it started ringing.
It was Dax, of course.
âHello,â I said tentatively. If he was calling me, I knew it wasnât good news.
